Castlemaine Steiner School & Kindergarten Named Finalist in ResourceSmart Schools Awards
Castlemaine Steiner School & Kindergarten has been named a finalist in the 2025 ResourceSmart Schools Awards, Victoria’s largest sustainability awards for schools, recognising excellence in environmental education and action.
Our school has been shortlisted in the Curriculum Leadership School of the Year category. At the heart of our nomination is the school’s inspiring wetlands management project, which sees students, staff and the wider school community come together to care for and restore the Basset Creek wetlands in partnership with the North Central Catchment Management Authority.
As part of this ongoing initiative, students have:
- Removed invasive species threatening native biodiversity
- Planted more than 200 native trees and shrubs
- Constructed bird hides using recycled materials
- Monitored local wildlife, including bird species and native fish
- Played an active role in regular fish audits
These experiences enrich the curriculum and foster ecological stewardship in our students. We are thrilled to be recognised alongside schools across Victoria who are ‘Working Together’ — this year’s awards theme — to make a difference for the environment, their communities, and future generations.
The awards ceremony will take place on 5 June at the Melbourne Cricket Ground, and we are honoured to represent our community as a finalist.
