Updates from our Educational Leader…Student Support Services

We provide the following update in terms of pastoral care support moving forward into 2022.

Throughout last term we reflected on the various learning and support needs arising across class levels, and made the decision to not continue with the current Wellbeing Coordinator role. As a result, as you are aware, Sandra Harvey is no longer with us. We wish to thank Sandra for all her work in supporting students and families and the professionalism she brought to the role as Wellbeing Coordinator. She will be missed and we wish her all the best for the future.

As part of a new model of pastoral care, we are providing student support services within a framework that emphasises the trusting and supporting relationship between Class Teacher and Student, all within a network of skilled support provided by trained mental-health practitioners.

As Steiner educators, we need to be continually reflecting on the children in front of us and so adjust the educational environment surrounding them accordingly. During Term 4, a range of our Staff will be undertaking Mental Health First Aid Training and all Teachers will have access to a consulting Psychologist to work alongside. Further to this the School will be undertaking an audit and review of how the Australian Steiner Curriculum introduces and develops social-emotional competencies across the Class levels. We are seeking to build the whole School’s capacity to offer knowledge and confident assistance, including referrals, as needed, when supporting the academic wellbeing of our Students and Staff. As per our existing communications process if you have concerns for your child/ren’s participation and progress at School please make contact with you Class Teacher in the first instance; they will know how to refer on your queries if it is not a matter they are able to address directly with you and your child.

Our College of Teachers has begun a Student Care Mapping Project, which audits and reviews how we specifically support Prep-Class 8 children with respect to the following three areas:

PREVENTION: Promoting and building, positive social connections, safe environments, life skills such as positive coping and problem-solving skills, pro-social values, positive self-regard, and a sense of purpose and agency or responsibility.

EARLY INTERVENTION: Supporting students who are at risk of disengagement and not achieving their potential.

RESTORATION/POSTVENTION: Identifying, managing, and limiting the impacts of emergency situations, natural disasters or traumatic incidents such as suicide, accident or critical illness.

The outcomes of this mapping project will provide further insights into how the Steiner Curriculum introduces and develops social-emotional competencies across the Class levels and aspires to meet the needs of the children in front of us, preparing them to be young adults who can enter the world and contribute to society in a meaningful way. Part of our Professional Learning time together as a Staff on Tuesday 14th December will be to share and discuss the findings to date and to consider areas in which we might extend our support. One example of an action includes further developing processes around daily recording of student care information alongside recording student attendance.

We are also pleased to highlight that the School has been successful in receiving adequate funding to enable 15 of our Staff to undertake Mental Health First Aid training; ten of these Staff will complete their training by the end of this Term. This Professional Development course supports participants to:

– distinguish between normal adolescent development and a developing mental health problem

– have open conversations with young people

– recognise signs and symptoms of possible mental health problems

– identify where to seek further help

Another exciting project underway is our budding relationship with ‘Dogs Connect’. Over the past 9 months Amanda McDonald has been undertaking training and mentorship through Dogs Connect to become an accredited Wellbeing Dog Handler. Through this program, it will soon become possible for CSSK to have a Wellbeing Dog at School for potentially a few days each week. ‘Dogs Connect’ works across a variety of settings including aged care, hospitals, prisons, schools and emergency services. The program is informed by research evidence, and is conducted in collaboration with LaTrobe University, as an approach that can help with trauma, anxiety, the escalation cycle, building empathy, and can support emotional regulation, social connection and communication amongst children. We look forward to welcoming our Wellbeing Dog and will be bringing you further details about the program by the end of this School year.

Part of our intention is to foster ever stronger partnerships between home and school, as we recognise that the best educational opportunities are provided when a positive relationship exists between these two environments.

Tavish's Bird Watching

There is a Pardalote burrow next to the class 5 room. I have seen them flying in and out of it.

There are also Dusky Woodswallows which are rare. They have been sitting on the fence next to the junior oval.

Enrolment News

Hello Everyone,

The end of year is coming and enrolments for 2022 are in progress. We will be holding an orientation session later in the term for all our new families and are very much looking forward to welcoming them all into our school. We are in the process of scheduling our three year old Kinder enrolment meetings and will be in touch with those families shortly.

We currently have openings in our Kinder and Prep programs and vacancies in some of our Primary classes for 2022.

We are also very excited to be able to offer School Tours again. It was fantastic to meet our interested families face-to-face and show them our beautiful school.

Class Communications & Contact Lists

A friendly reminder for ALL parents who are using their class contact lists to share information. When permission is sought from families to have their contact details published to a class list it is for the purpose of sharing information such as Spring Fair details or Meal Train scenarios.

It is NOT to be used to promote personal businesses or political beliefs.

Prep News

The children are enjoying our walks and playing near the oval.

Ron, Sarah and Lewis came to visit us in Prep. Ron played the didgeridoo and told us a story. Sarah sang with us and Lewis taught us some dances.

Arkeria came to visit Prep. She talked to us about Aborinal culture, told us a story, sang and drew pictures in the sand.

Class One News

Class One have been busy practising their counting and exploring ways to show how plus, minus, multiply and divide stories can be written down.

They have also been creative in the playground with some of the flowers blooming in our yard.

Whilst eating our morning tea, Kookaburra and Crimson Rosella came to perch on the swing frame. We are noticing lots of birds on our walks. The family of choughs that live in our school grounds have some young that are continually asking their parents to find them some food, even though, they do look old enough to look for it themselves.

We have also enjoyed being able to play out in the light rain, when it is still warm enough, if we have a raincoat. Very variable weather at the moment, so good to be prepared for any sort.

The work on the new building has been of great interest to us and we have seen trenches dug, soil put into trucks, holes dug and gravel being poured. We’ve noticed the survey cameras and the level tools being used.

Class Four News

The children are very impressed with their new fountain pens and have been spending time getting used to them. In class we are continuing to practice good writing posture, and using cursive script. As the weeks continue the children will build up to obtaining their Fountain Pen license.

Last week we had a great mini ensemble session. The children are learning a few songs off by heart. We hope you enjoy this piece of Frere Jacques.
